DIGGER CAUGHT up with Billy as he laced his trainers after practice. “Coach wants to see you, Billy.”

“What’s up?”

“Didn’t say. ‘Just get him in my office,’ he says, like I’m his secretary or something.”

Billy looked up at Digger in surprise. “You okay?”

Digger’s lips formed a thin line. “It’s nothing. Just watch your back, right?”

Billy was pretty sure what was on the agenda. Bye-bye basketball for Billy. Good-bye scholarship. Hello, McDonald’s. Tully Sam might be able to get away with flamboyant clothes and humping everything that moved, but he was a star and on his way to the NBA. Billy was just… Billy.

Billy stood and held out his hand. “Hey, it’s been good while it lasted.”

Digger took his hand reflexively. “What the heck are you talking about? You do something I should know about?”

“I haven’t done anything wrong.”

“Then go in there, listen, nod, swear you’ll never do it again, and I’ll see you tomorrow. Jeez, you’d think this was the frigging drama department.” Digger stalked off.

Billy hoisted his duffle and placed foot ahead of foot until he could examine the paint chips on the doorframe outside Rocker’s office. Regrettably, the door was open. Rocker glanced up and motioned him in.

“Close the door behind you.”

Here it comes. Billy stood in front of the desk.

Rocker leaned back. “What are you standing there for? Quit hovering and sit.”

Billy lowered himself reluctantly into the waiting chair.

Rocker examined him. “Your dad called this afternoon.”

I am so fucked.

“You and him have a problem?”

“What do you mean?”

“He seems to think you’ve fallen in with a bad crowd.”

People are going to start thinking you’re a faggot. “He… uh….”

“You got some kind of problem I should know about?”

“No.”

“Drinking too much?”

“No.”

“Using?”

“Of course not.”

“Do you think you’ve fallen in with a bad crowd?”

“What? No. The team’s really great. Everyone’s great.”

Rocker smiled, the expression failing to reach his eyes. “I suggest you call your dad tonight and have a little heart-to-heart. Maybe suggest he leave the coaching to the professionals.”

“He doesn’t mean anything by it, you know. He just wants what’s best for me.”

“Does he? You’ve made a great start here, Billy. You’re showing promise on the court and working well with your teammates. Don’t let anything get in the way of that.” Rocker stood.

Billy jumped to his feet so suddenly he knocked the chair over behind him. “Shit, sorry.” He scrambled to set the chair back on its legs.

“See you at practice, Billy.”

“Right. Thanks, Coach.” Billy backed out of the office, resisting the temptation to bow as he went.
